New U.S. Group Copyright Registration for Published 2D Artwork (GR2D)
13-03-2026
The U.S. Copyright Office has adopted a final rule creating a new group registration option—Group Registration for Two-Dimensional Artwork (GR2D). GR2D is intended to reduce cost and paperwork for creators and brands that publish frequent 2D visual assets (illustrations, graphics, and similar works).
What GR2D Covers
- Up to 20 published 2D artworks per filing, using one online application and filing fee ($85 USD).
- All works in the group must be first published within the same calendar year.
- Digital deposit: one complete file per work; file name must match the title listed in the application.
Why This Matters for International-Based Brands and Creators
- If your artwork is used in the U.S. market (including online), U.S. registration can strengthen enforcement strategy.
- GR2D makes it easier and less expensive to register seasonal or high-volume brand artwork without filing multiple separate applications.
Key Limitations
- All works must have the same author and the same claimant (no joint works in the same GR2D filing).
- GR2D is limited to 2D pictorial or graphic works; it does not cover 3D works, technical drawings, works of applied art, or websites/compilations.
Examples in Jewelry Fashion and Advertising
- Collection sketches; ornamental motif drawings; textile print artwork and pattern graphics.
- Logos, monograms, icon sets, campaign key art, and marketing graphics.
- Packaging and collateral artwork (box art, bag art, hangtag graphics).
Recommended Next Steps
- Create an internal tracker for 2D assets (title, file name, first publication date, and ownership posture).
- Standardize titles/file names now (GR2D requires file names to match titles in the application).
- Choose a filing cadence (monthly/quarterly for high output) and confirm ownership (work-for-hire vs. assignment) before filing.
